On October 30, 2016, the Basilica of San Benedetto in Norcia crumbled, under the most powerful of the earthquakes that devastated central Italy in that year. The Basilica, which dates back to 1200, has had a troubled history of earthquakes and reconstructions, always remaining a nerve center of city life and a point of reference for the Benedictine community of Europe and the world.
Our studio is part of the working group that won the international tender announced in 2020 for the design of the reconstruction, which will have to consider the multiple meanings of the Basilica: a monument of great historical and artistic value, a place of worship, an identity element for the city community and for the country, a symbol for the Benedictine monastic community.
