Crypt of the Reggio Emilia Cathedral

Crypt of Cathedral of Reggio Emilia, Italy
2006 – 2010
Architect: Arch. Mauro Severi
Lighting Designer: Arch. Massimo Iarussi

The Crypt of the Cathedral of St. Mary Assunta in Reggio Emilia has developed through the centuries as a sort of autonomous church within the mother church. The crypt has been involved in a huge restoration work that, in addition to the recovery of important artistic and architectural evidence, has also aimed to fully return the crypt to liturgical use.
In this context, a new lighting system has been developed, which on one side enhances the sobriety and austerity of the place, on the other hand it guarantees the fruition for liturgical purposes.
Custom semi-recessed lighting fixtures have been designed to be installed on the cross vaults keystone.
