The Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Fribourg, Switzerland, is a jewel of Gothic art. Its tower, 76 m high, was until the nineteenth century the highest in Switzerland and is a landmark for the city and the surrounding area.
In 2021, the State of Freiburg launched a competition for the new lighting ofthe Cathedral.
Our project revolves around the creation of long tubular elements with diffused light, with a strong symbolic value, suspended from the capitals in adherence to the fasciculated pillars, as if to merge with the architecture.
The luminous elements generate a soft, extremely warm light, which, thanks to the use of appropriate optical devices, fades progressively the light intensity upwards. The effect evokes that of a flame which tends upwards emphasizing the fundamental character of Gothic architecture.
The project is completed, for the functional needs, by compact and precise projectors hidden from view between the openings of the triforium.
